Background of the study:
Boarding schools have long been considered institutions that not only provide academic instruction but also contribute significantly to the moral and character development of students. In Ile-Ife Central, boarding schools serve as a microcosm of society where students are exposed to structured discipline, communal living, and diverse social interactions (Adebola, 2024). These environments are designed to inculcate values such as responsibility, respect, and self-discipline. However, the isolated nature of boarding life may also lead to challenges such as peer pressure, homesickness, and potential behavioral issues. Current research suggests that while boarding schools can positively shape moral development through rigorous routines and ethical training, they may simultaneously expose students to negative influences if proper guidance is lacking (Folarin, 2023). The integration of extracurricular activities, moral instruction, and pastoral care in boarding schools plays a crucial role in nurturing well-rounded individuals. This study examines the impact of boarding school environments on the moral development of students, exploring how institutional practices and peer interactions contribute to ethical growth and social responsibility (Adebola, 2024).
Statement of the problem:
Despite the structured environment of boarding schools in Ile-Ife Central, there are concerns regarding inconsistent moral development among students. Challenges such as inadequate supervision, negative peer influences, and the absence of comprehensive ethical education have been reported. These factors raise questions about the overall effectiveness of boarding schools in fostering strong moral values. This study aims to identify the gaps and propose solutions to enhance moral development (Folarin, 2023).
